Günther Uecker gained great reputation with his white painted, relief-like nail pictures and is now one of the most important contemporary German artists

In 1974 Günther Uecker created stage designs for a performance of the ‘rescue and relief opera’ ‘Leonore’ / ‘Fidelio’ by Ludwig van Beethoven. This small lithograph represents with its title ‘Die Freiheit’ (freedom) the third and final plate of a series that refers to this opera. It was published by the Erker Presse in St. Gallen in an edition of 100 copies. This copy was printed aside from the edition.


Condition:

The lithograph is in very good condition. The image measures 30.2 x 19.5 cm, the sheet is 33 x 23.6 cm.



Günther Uecker (b. 1930)

Günther Uecker studied painting in Wismar and Berlin-Weißensee from 1949 to 1953. He left the GDR and moved to West Germany to continue his studies at the art academy in Düsseldorf under Otto Pankok. Already in 1956/57, he created his first relief-like ‘nail paintings’, for which he is internationally known today. Some of his art can be classified as kinetic art. In 1961 joined the artist group ZERO which was initiated by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene. He represented Germany in 1970 and 1972 at the Biennale in Venice and took more than once part in the documenta. He was a professor at the academy in Düsseldorf from 1974 to 1995, and has won numerous awards. Günther Uecker lives and works in Düsseldorf. (fea)
