Otmar Alt’s artistic approach describes puzzle-like color fields, which are precisely framed by black lines. In his sculptural works, however, the artist deals with new materials and techniques, so that he sometimes omits the color in favor of his formal vocabulary. The present bronze is an impressive example, since it unveils the artist’s playful sense of figuration. Besides, the bronze reveals a cat which is the favorite animal of the artist and therefore adorns many of his works.

Condition:

The sculpture is in good condition with faint areas of rubbing on the nose and the tongue. The work measures 17 x 6 x 5.5 cm.

Otmar Alt (b. 1940)

Otmar Alt was born in Wernigerode, located in the Harz district of Germany. At the beginning of the 1950s he moved to Berlin, where he started an apprenticeship as window dresser and poster artist, after finishing school. In 1959 he decided to deepen his artistic training at the Berliner Meisterschule für Kunsthandwerk, where he graduated as a master student of Hermann Bachmann (1922-1995). He then became a stage design assistant in Trier and Frankfurt am Main, but also started to organize his first solo exhibitions. Otmar Alt’s multifaceted oeuvre comprises not only paintings, graphic works and sculptures, but also designs for children’s books, posters, wall and façade designs, as well as fountain decorations and stage designs. Today, examples of his artistic output can be found in the Westfalenpark in Dortmund, in the Allwetterzoo in Münster and among numerous public collections such as the AutoMuseum Volkswagen. (cbo)
