Description
French, late 19th century. French Empire style walnut secretaire a abattant having a rectangular shaped black with white marble top over a frieze drawer with applied gilt lion masks to each side over a fall front lid opening to a fitted interior with long drawer above an open compartment over a central deep drawer flanked to each side by three small drawers over a gilt tooled and inlaid leather writing surface above a pair of paneled cupboard doors, all flanked by herm figures, on paw feet. Height 60.75", width 40.25", depth 18.5".
Condition
Piece has missing molding under the frieze drawer. There is also a crack with repair. There is a horizontal crack center across the fall front (see image #1). There are scattered dings. Lock has been replaced and the catch is missing. Scattered worm wood damage. In the desk, the top small drawer to the left has a hole in bottom. The leather writing surface shows wear, scratches (see image #9). Pair of cupboard doors do not shut tightly and there has been obvious shrinkage.
