Description
John Serz (English, c.1810-1878) and J. R. Rice (American, 1824-1876) after Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré (French, 1832-1883). Group of two black and white engravings, published in 1886, comprising of "Jesus Scourged" depicting Jesus of Nazareth having fallen to the floor wearing the crown of thorns and a drape, with a crowd of violent spectators to left being held back by Roman holy men, two of which hold scourges, an ancient torture weapon similar to a whip that was used on Jesus before crucifixion; and "Raising of the Cross" depicting Jesus having been nailed to the cross with the frame being raised up to a standing position by a group of draped men as armored soldiers watch from the side and a group of seated men to front play dice. Framed approximately 21.5" x 19.5", sight size approximately 9.5" x 7".
