Description
A framed steam locomotive photograph from the Baldwin Company in Philadelphia. The outside of the frame measures 27 1/2” by 22”. The image size is 17” by 11”. The locomotive is a 4-4-0 and comes from an early time when locomotives were named and not numbered. It has a square headlight, ornate sand and steam domes, tiny cylinders and the name “Gov Smyth” on both the tender and the cab. The print has “Baldwin Locomotive Works” and “M. Baird & Co, Philadelphia” beneath that. I researched locomotives named Governor Smyth and New Hampshire and the Concord & Montreal come right up. That Gov Smyth was a 4-6-0 built by Manchester in 1891. This locomotive definitely pre-dates that so this Gov Smyth must be from further south. New England was not a hot bed for Baldwin in the early years. The frame is very dark and there is some oak staining on the print in the center top area. Still a great early piece. Because of the fragile nature of the glass and frame, we will not ship this item.
Thanks to a fellow collector for researching this further and coming up with Concord Railroad data on this locomotive. It makes sense with the Governor Smyth name. The scrapping had to be between 1889 and 1891 when the 2nd Gov Smyth a 4-6-0 was acquired. The direct quote:
The Gov Smyth was built in 1871 for the Concord RR. One (and only) sister loco was the Victor. The R&LHS Bulletin # 35 has the CRR roster. A friend read me the info - construction # 2366, of 2/20/71. Later renamed the Winnisquam, then became 1st # 733, finally scrapped while on roster of the C&M RR; dates not noted. Lastly, from Poors, Smyth was a Director of the CRR by 1876, but I could not go back earlier.
