Dimensions: 170 x 33.5 cm
Excellent condition

This Japanese tea scroll from the Showa period (1926-1989) was inscribed by HAYASHI Ekyo (1885-1979), who resided in Myoshinji and became the abbot of Tofukuji, a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto. The inscription on the box certifies the authenticity of the scroll and was written by a later abbot of Tofukuji, FUKUSHIMA Keido (1933-2011), who was well known within Western Zen circles for his transmission of Rinzai, a school of Zen in Japanese Buddhism that focuses on meditation, samu (physical work done with mindfulness) and koans – anecdotes, statements or questions that are meant to provoke meditative thought leading to great insight. The Zen koan of this scroll is Meigetsu Seifu (“A clear moon and pure wind”), making this tea scroll perfect for a moonlit setting or a tea ceremony in spring or autumn.

Condition:

The scroll is in excellent condition with fine creases but no major ones, which attests to the high quality of the mounting. The dimensions are 170 x 33.5 cm (length x width).
