This Bizen ceramic figure represents an arhat. The word ‘arhat’ is Sanskrit and means ‘perfected one’. It is a religious title for saints; people who have renounced all worldly desires and are not reborn after reaching nirvana are worthy of the title. The present figure is lean and only the hips are covered. The raised right hand is placed on the bald head. The forefinger of the left hand points on an insect on his leg. The arhat has a finely modeled beard and a humorous expression. The eyes are accented with white and black and a signature can be found on the underside.



Condition:

The ceramic figure is in good condition signs of age and wear. The painting is slightly rubbed off, restorations and small manufacturing flaws are visible. The height measures 18.5 cm. (lvp)
