This large, barkcloth kavat mask is primarily used in the night dance which involves a fire-lit performance surrounded by a male orchestra. Each mask contains a spirit associated with a specific forest animal, plant or product. This mask has large, round eyes and a gaping mouth decorated with a repetitive red and black geometric motif.
Overall good condition; the interior binding is tight with very little loss. The barkcloth is intact, showing minor losses to the stitching in the mouth and outer rim. The pigment is very bright still. The mask measures 48 x 25 x 23 in. (length x width x height).
