First Edition. Original pictorial boards. 304pp. Text illustrations - 40 headpiece drawings by 31 year-old Chiura Obata - probably his first book illustration.
Immigrating to the US from Japan as a teenager, Obata began work in San Francisco as an illustrator and commercial artist, later gaining renown for the magnificent paintings and prints he produced while on a 1927 sketching tour of Yosemite and the Sierras, and then as an Art instructor at UC Berkeley from 1932 to 1953 - interrupted by his wartime internment during World War II.
