Expressive sculpture of the Holy Mother of God as Our Lady of Sorrows, a form of representation in the veneration of Mary, which came to its heyday during the Middle Ages

This masterly sculpture of a Rhenish Madonna was created in the 18th century. It is carved full round from lime wood and polychrome painted with some additional gold staffage. Her dark blue coat throws deep moving folds. Her head is tilted upward looking towards heaven, praying and full of eternal concern for her son Jesus Christ. The subject of the ‘Mater Doloresa’, also called ‘Our Lady of Sorrows’, already developed in the Middle Ages, where the veneration of Mary came to its heyday.



The sculpture is in good condition according to its age. The polychrome color version is retouched and slightly soiled with some age-related color flaking. One fraction at the back. The dimensions are 69 x 29 cm.
