Collection of over twenty Civil War letters and original envelopes from an 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry soldier and Andersonville Prisoner of War, Frederick Shape. Collection of letters was written between the years of 1862 to 1864, as correspondence home to his wife and siblings. Included in the series of letters is one written at the Confederate prison in Andersonville Georgia. Shape was a prisoner of Andersonville and later died in the camp shortly after this letter was written. The envelope is signed " Andersonville, Prisoner's Letter" and was written two month's before the death of Shape. The 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry was also known as the 163rd Pennsylvania Regiment, which mustered in Pittsburgh, and most notorious for participating in the Battle of Gettysburg. Frederick Shape is listed on the plaque for the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry at Gettysburg.
