Cf. Abraham Hankins was born in Gomel, Russia in 1904. His talent for painting was noticed at an early age; as encouragement in 1914, he was sent to the United States to study at the aclaimed Pennsylania Academy of Fine Arts.

Soon after the start of WW I, Hankins enlisted in the US Army. While in France he suffered lung damage during a gas attack and was then sent back to the States. His studies as a painter were interupted by a new found interest in music resulting in his moving to Paris to begin serious musical training as a tenor.

Throughout his years in Paris the artist never lost interest in painting, upon his return to Philadelphia in 1936, he enrolled into the Philadelphia Museum School of Art, the Barnes Foundation, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His work is well positioned amongst noted contemporaries in the Collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Public Library and the Barnes Foundation Collection.

In 1963 at the age of 59, Abraham Hankins died while residing in Miami Beach.
