(Nevil, astronomer and mathematician, 1732-1811) Autograph Letter third person to Sir Joseph Banks as President of the Royal Society, 2pp., 8vo, Dean Street, [London], Wednesday Afternoon, 2 o'clock 1st May 1782, regarding Herschell's paper calculating the magnitude of stars and discussing mistakes in the calculations made by Halley and Herschell, "It seems Dr. Halley first made the mistake, & not Mr. Herschell, in supposing that the stars of the 2d magnitude are twice as far as those of the first, & so on, which from Mr. Mitchell's experiment can't be true", folds, small tears in left hand margin not affecting text, slightly browned ; and an engraved portrait of Maskelyne, v.s., v.d. (2).
