This ceremonial shield dates back to the late 19th century and was made in Laos or Vietnam of wood. Due to its elaborate and beautiful workmanship with lacquer, metal coatings and silver stripes this shield has a ceremonial character, however is can also protect its wearer from arrows. The recurring motifs of this shield are radially-scale solar rays, starting from the middle. There are various ethnological studies on Sun cults at the Moi in Vietnam or at the Kha or the Nia Hon, which demonstrating the ceremonial character. This shield can be worn by a back handle and comes on a matching base.
The ceremonial shield is in very good condition for its age. Signs of wear such as an age-related crack can be seen on the reverse. The total height is approx. 50 cm. (lvp)
