Gérardmer is a commune in the Vosges, Lorraine, where Maupassant was receiving numerous water health treatments because of his physical and mental health degradation.

Maupassant´s health was, at the time of the present letter, quickly declining after his brother´s death few months earlier, mad, at the early age of 33.
