Item Details
Description
Mid 19th century, 152 x 103 cm, Central Anatolia, Cappadocia

Collection VOK: Anatolia 13

This small kilim showing a niche design and an extra-wide border was woven in one of the villages of the Aksaray region. Two gül-like box shapes are aligned along the central axis of a narrow red field separated from the border by lateral “zip fastener” outlines, with three stepped polygons of different sizes arranged beneath them. The green triangular gable decorated with large hooks and flanked by four lateral secondary motifs appears to float at the upper end of the field. The powerful serrated designs of the border are particularly impressive. Hirsch assumes that the kilim was used at a funeral and subsequently donated to the local mosque. – Very good condition.
