Description
Late 19th century, 408 x 186 cm, North Persia, Varamin region

Collection VOK: Caucasus - Persia 49

Coarsely woven, this borderless Luri kilim from the Varamin region displays a hermetic repeat of sharply serrated designs arranged into steep colour diagonals. The composition is unusual; most kilims of this type show designs of nested diamonds. Sadighi writes that he is not aware of any other Varamin examples showing diagonal stripes. Due to the large number of colours employed and the small scale of the serrated motifs, the piece appears to oscillate, for which reason such kilims are aptly described as "eye dazzlers" in English. Interlocking the designs serves to create a weaving without slits, and consequently these resilient kilims were suitable for everyday use. – Original finishes all around, good condition.
