AN EXCEPTIONAL TORAH SHIELD BY THE SONS OF MARTIN FRIEDRICH MULLER. Berlin, c. 1780/85. Decorated with a large hand cut crown decoration, the Decalogue, several semi-precious stones, swag chasing, two flower pots, lions, Solomonic pillars, a portion plaque and a chased border. Additionally decorated with three hanging plaques. This shield was presented to Gustave Tuck in 1934 by the Jewish Historical Society of England. At that time the added plaques were engraved “Remember the days of oldâ€, “Given in honor of Gustave Tuck HaCohen†and “Presented to Gustave Tuck Esq., president of the Jewish Historical Society of England 1929-1934â€. Gustave Tuck (1857-1942) owned a printing press that specialized in art books. He was treasurer and subsequently president of the Jewish Historical Society of England. He was an avid collector of Judaica and purchased much of his collection from the sale of Arthur Howitt’s collection at the Christies’ sale in May of 1932. 14.375†x 12.25†not including chains.
