SWINBURNE (Algernon Charles, poet and literary critic, 1837-1909). Autograph letter signed, from The Pines, Putney Hill S.W. dated August 7 (18)93, "Dear Mr Ellis, I am greatly obliged by your beautiful present. I have never read Cavendish through - as (thanks to you) I now shall - though I was familiar with such extracts as have been used to illustrate the text of Shakespeare. You do me far too much honour in calling me an omnivorous reader. My omnivoracity is limited to the half century (1590-1640) of poetic and dramatic literature which stretches from the dawn of Marlowe to the afternoon or eveing of Shirley. Of that period in English poetry and drama I do think I know more than most men: in other fields I am only a smatterer and a gleaner, but grateful for such generous guidance as Morris's and yours", 2pp. With an accompanying letter from Herbert Ellis (son of the above recipient) to de Reul, sending him Swinburne's letter from his collection, explaining that Swinburne was writing to his father having received from him the Kelmscott Edition of Cavendish's Life of Wolsey.
