Sonia Delaunay-Terk was a pioneer of Orphic Cubism and belonged to the Parisian avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century; similar prints of her fetch up to €7,000 on international auctions

The abstract composition ‘Grande Icône I’ is a typical color lithograph by Sonia Delaunay-Terk and was made around 1970. Together with Robert Delaunay she developed a central movement of abstract painting, called Orphic Cubism. The present work is a beautiful example of the artistic output of that period.



Condition:

The sheet is in very good condition with minimal traces of use like slight marginal wear and staining on the back. The depiction measures 69 x 49.7 cm and the dimensions of the sheet are 90.9 x 63.2 cm.



Sonia Delaunay-Terk (1885-1979)

Sonia Delaunay-Terk was the first living artist to have a retrospective in 1964 at the Louvre. She began studying at the age of 18 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. She then continued her studies at the Académie de La Palette in Paris. In her first marriage she was married to the gallery owner Wilhelm Uhde and in her second marriage to the painter Robert Delaunay. Together with Robert she founded Orphism, an art movement of geometric abstraction. During the First World War she lived in Portugal and in Spain. After her return to Paris, she remained close to abstraction in her work and also created fabric designs and theatre costumes. The artist is a member of the French Legion of Honor. Shortly before her death, she donated her printed body of work to the Centre Pompidou in Paris. (tm)
