The caricaturist „Les Deux Gommeux“ (The two spivs) by Jean-Louis Forain shows two smooth gentlemen dressed in white tie, all ready to impress society. The one to the right seems to blow himself up to higher heights whereas the one to the left seems to be training his bow to the ladies. Show and shine and fine irony all come together in this little etching.

Jean-Louis Forain (1852-1931)
Jean-Louis Forain was a French painter and graphic artist who began his career as a caricaturist. He later studied at the renowned École des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. Amongst his friends, he counted such painters as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas and Édouard Manet who influenced him, just as the works by Honoré Daumier. He exhibited at the Salon for the first time in 1879 and since then regularly. He was named an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
