Ratings:
Conti Costanti
Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #104 (April 1996): 90/100
“Costanti is unquestionably one of this appellation's most reliable producers. That being said, I have bestowed this outstanding rating more on potential than on how the wine is currently showing. It exhibits a dense dark ruby color, a non-existent nose, and mouthsearing, astringent, bitterly hard tannin. Extremely backward, dense, and impenetrable, this wine possesses considerable weight and intensity on the palate, but I am worried about the rustic side of the tannin, as well as the fact that a more realistic assessment of the wine's direction cannot be made for at least 8-10 years. Overall, 1990 appears to have sweeter, riper fruit than the 1988 vintage, but this may be an example where Costanti's 1988s, as well as his glorious 1985s surpass what he produced in 1990. Readers who love Costanti (as I do) may want to buy this wine on faith, but I wouldn't sell the farm for this particular effort. Don't touch a bottle before 2006.“
Wine Spectator (Oktober 1995): 93/100
“Best wine ever made by Costanti. It's bursting at the seams with fresh fruit. Layers of violet, rose petal and red berry are balanced by lovely oak. Could age a bit more, but tempting now. Try in 1998.”
Caparzo
Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #104 (April 1996): 91/100
“This excellent estate has turned out two large-scaled, tannic, backward Brunellos that appear to be among the more concentrated wines of the vintage. The 1990 Brunello di Montalcino La Casa is one of the few opaque, saturated-colored Brunellos of the vintage. The nose offers up intense aromas of ripe berries, tobacco-tinged, leathery, smoky, roasted herbs, and grilled meat. There is huge flavor extraction, massive tannin, extraordinary density and richness, and a monster finish. This wine is considerably thicker and richer than the Brunello di Montalcino (green label) bottling, and in need of 5-7 years of cellaring. This is an outstanding example of this excellent vintage, but do not expect the tannin to completely melt away.“
Wine Spectator (November 1996): 93/100
“A wine built for aging with its solid tannins, silky yet powerful, and loads of fruit. Full-bodied, with a long, fruity finish. Impressive now. Best after 2000.”
