PostersGreat Lot of Liberty Bond Posters from The Great War
World War I, Lot of 3 Different Liberty Bond Posters, Women! Help America's Sons Win the War" by R.H. Porteous, "And They Thought We Couldn't Fight" by Clyde Forsythe, and "Remember Belgium" by Ellsworth Young, Very Fine to Extremely Fine.
1. "Women! Help America's Sons Win the War" by R.H. Porteous, dated 1917, was printed by Edwards & Deutsch Litho Co. in Chicago. This 30" x 20" poster is in great condition, having a professionally repaired tear across the bottom (below the words "U.S. Government Bonds") and a few minor wrinkles. 2. "Remember Belgium" by Ellsworth Young, refers to the destruction of Belgium and the rape of its women by German soldiers. This 30" x 20" poster was printed by United States Printing and Litho Company, and is in very nice condition, having 2 professionally repaired tears or cracks at the top and a tear at the bottom. 3. "And They Thought We Couldn't Fight" by Clyde Forsythe, was printed by Ketterlinus in Philadelphia. This huge, 41.5" x 30.5" poster is in very nice condition, having several expertly repaired minor cracks and tears, and a restored lower right corner (the last 2 letters of the printer’s name are missing). Each of these original posters has been professionally laid to a heavy, archival linen backing for preservation. This is an outstanding and diverse group of Great War Liberty Bond Posters.
The "Women! Help America's Sons Win the War" poster is "signed" R. H. Porteous. Nothing has been found on this artist, and some have attributed this poster to P. S. Porteus (note different spelling). Others attribute this to Robert H. Porteous, perhaps the same Robert Porteous listed in the 1900 census at Passaic City, NJ, who was born in 1865 in Illinois."
