No. 9371a in the official Catalogue of the Hanauer Werkstätte

The designs of the Hagenauer Werkstätte have fascinated many people over the time and this little warrior is no exception to the rule. Even though there exist more than a thousand different models they all have the unique Hagenauer style and you will always know if you see one in front of you. In the 1920ies, Hagenauer began to produce the small metal and wooden figures of either humans or animals and had a huge success with them. Instead of creating real looking copies of nature, Hagenauer made his designs far more abstract and reduced them to the essential which attracted the modern oriented bourgeoisie.

The little warrior consists of black patinated brass that has been partly polished to its golden shimmer to highlight the oar, the warrior’s headdress and the lips. Standing firmly in his canoe, he leans forward in the act of rowing, holding the oar with both hands to the left of the boat.

The Indian warrior can be found in the catalogue of the Hagenauer Werkstätte that proves its authenticity. It can also be seen, that he belongs to a group of warriors, some of them rowing, some of them in different positions of attack and some of them dancing war dances. Accordingly, anyone wishing to start a collection has a perfect starting point here. And anyone already collecting should not miss out on this one!

The warrior is marked on the underside with the stamps WHW, Made in Austria and Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien.

Carl Hagenauer and the Hagenauer Werkstätte:

Carl Hagenauer (1871-1928) founded his firm, the Hagenauer Werkstätte in 1898 in Vienna. As a learned chaser and metall spinner, Hagenauer focused on producing small bronzes, called „Wiener Bronzen“ (Viennese Bronzes). They were extremely successful with small bronzes and metal products in the style of the Viennese Secession which won countless prices and had been shown on many exhibitions. They reduced their designs to their function and abstained from any ornamental decorations. Designs were made not only by Hagenauer, his brother and his children, but also by Josef Hoffmann and varied from the already mentioned bronzes to everyday items such as corkscrews, bookends and inkwells. The designs are all from very high quality and exquisitely crafted and for a long time, Hagenauer was the only company in the world producing this type of arts and crafts. May their material be a hundred years old, their look is as modern as ever. All pieces have a strong life of their own and each deserves to get admired in a new place.
