A lucite table lighter with fish décor from the series ‘Aquarium Standard’
The Dunhill Aquarium lighters which were made in the early 1950s are for sure among collectors' favorites. Each Aquarium lighter is one of a kind. The scenes were hand-painted by the artist Ben Shillingford which makes every lighter unique and thus very desirable. This example is true to its name designed after an aquarium, decorated with under water scenes on both sides.
The lighter is in good condition, the Lucite is occasionally llightly bumped. The measurements are 8 x 10.5 cm. It is engraved on the bottom with ‘DUNHILL LIGHTER’ and ‘Made in England’ and numbered with ‘REG. No. 737418’.
Dunhill
The British luxury company ‘Dunhill’ manufactures high-priced leather goods, clothes, shoes, accessories, eyewear, perfume, pens, lighters and watches - all for the distinguished gentleman. The company was founded by Alfred Dunhill (1872-1959), who learned his craftsmanship in his father's saddlery. He first opened a car accessories company and then a tobacco shop. Later, he launched the first lighter. In 1929, he handed the business over to his son, Henry Alfred Dunhill, which made the company internationally successful. Today, “Dunhill” belongs to the Swiss Richemont Group.
