Description
Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec culture, ca. 1000-400 BCE. Hand-built terracotta head of Olmec baby figurine. The Olmec were noted for their baby face figurines. This is significant as representations of children is relatively rare in Meso-America. This head shows hallmark Olmec facial features - the jowly face, downturned open mouth, and puffy slit-like eyes. Piercings in ears once for suspending ornaments. Custom, wood-block stand. Head itself measures 2-3/4" long x 1-1/4" wide.
Pre-Columbian, Peten, Guatemala, ca. 550-850 CE. A Mayan head, so finely hand built and carved, boasting a stylized fanciful coiffure, charming almond-shaped eyes, ear ornaments, and an expressive parted mouth smile. Custom, wood-block stand. Head itself measures 2-1/4" long x 1-3/4" wide.
Pre-Columbian, Peten, Guatemala, ca. 550-850 CE. A second Mayan terracotta head, also presenting an elaborately styled coiffure, ear ornaments, a somewhat Olmecoid downturned mouth, and stylized yet somewhat naturalistic visage. Custom, wood-block stand. Head itself measures 2" long x 1-1/2" wide.
Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
