Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala, ca. 300-100 BCE. Relatively few face panels, heads, and masks have survived from the Mezcala relative to the vast numbers of figures. This example was adapted from a cobble of dark green serpentine, and of the M-22 or M-24 types. Precisely carved with masterful string cut technique and beautifully finished with two drilled holes at top used either for suspension as a pendant or for hanging on the walls of the indigenous' huts or for fastening to shrouds of the deceased when used in burials. Measures 2 3/4" H x 2 1/4" W x 7/8" D.
Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
