Description
Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Magdalena River area, Moskito style, ca. 990-1150 CE. Most burial urns of the lower Magdalena River region in northern Colombia feature figural portraits of male figures sitting on a low bench. More often than not birds embellish the sides of the urn rather than the top of the lid. Hence this lid with a totemic or symbolic bird figure sitting atop the lid with outspread wings and abstract decoration incised on its breast, is a somewhat unusual example. Note the body of the lid is further decorated with four panels of incised complex abstract geometrics. A fabulous piece, particularly for all you bird lovers! Size: 8-1/4" H x 9-1/2"D.
