The ‘bwoom’ mask belongs to the three royal masks and is one of the oldest mask types of the Kuba people. These masks are worn and funerals and other ceremonies, such the initiation of the boys. They represent ‘bwoom’, an oppositional and unruly figure whose rebellious character is reflected in a proud and aggressive dance style.
Condition:
The mask is in good condition with signs of wear consistent with age and use. There are abrasions and some notches as well as some minor traces of insect damage. An age crack to the top right of the head The dimensions are approx. 38 x 33 cm.
