Figures of this type were carved as effigies of deceased high-ranked clan members and placed near their tombs by their families in honor of them. The Bongo, and related ethnic groups such as the Belanda, carved full and half, mainly life-sized figures as well as stylized funerary posts surmounted by sculptural heads.
Condition:
The figure shows traces of weathering and insect losses. The height measures 77.5 cm.
