On a short, slightly tapered handle the figure of a kneeling mother, carrying a child on back

The head with a headscarf tied at the back and crowned by a large double ax symbol

The double ax-blade form on the figure's head is a typical feature and represents a thunderbolt. ‘Oshe’ dance staffs such as these are used during celebrations by both men and women and are said to represent thunder and rain in reference to the unpredictable power of the Shango. The latter is a peace loving god who was said to punish liars and thieves.



Condition:

The figure is in good condition with signs of wear consistent with age and use. In places, some abrasions and minimal traces of insect damage. The height, without the base, measures 48.5 cm.
