Description
Vienna, Austria, around 1900
Marked "AUSTRIA“ underneath the animal’s stomach
A beautiful realistic depiction of a bison!
Dimensions: 9 x 16.3 (height x length)
Good condition
This naturalistic miniature figure shows a bison with its characteristic dense fur at the front part of the body. The bronze has a beautiful gold-reddish patina at the head and the rear part, whereas the scraggy fur at the neck and the hunchback shows a dark brown, partially golden colour. The mark "AUSTRIA“ is located at the underside of the animal’s stomach. The horns of the bison are made of bone.
The sculpture is in a good overall condition with a beautiful patina that only shows small traces of age and use. The horns made of the bone are slightly stained. Two screw threads stick out of the left fore hoof and the right back hoof, indicating an original mounting. The sculpture measures 9 cm in height and 16.3 cm in length.
Vienna Bronze
The term "Vienna Bronze" refers to very fine cast bronzes from the period of about 1880-1930. The very naturalistic small sculptures have a huge variety of motives and preferential show expressive groups of figures, humorous illustrations and erotica. They were manufactured as decorative items and are now among the most demanded collectibles. Unfortunately, a large number of significant artistic works was melted during the world wars, to meet the metal needs of the artillery. (cbo)
