From 1994 to 2002, the American media artist Matthew Barney created the monumental ‘Cremaster Cycle’, a five-part series of art films with accompanying photographs, drawings and sculptures. The individual films are not numbered chronologically so that ‘Cremaster 5’ origins in 1997 whereas ‘Cremaster 3’ marks the end in 2002.

Condition:

The sheet is laid down on foam board and mounted to a mat. Apart from that the condition is very good. The frame is in good condition with slight signs of wear. The full-sheet image measures 82.9 x 58.6 cm. The framed dimensions are 101 x 77 cm.

Matthew Barney (geb. 1967)

Matthew Barney was born in San Francisco. After his graduation from High school he began to study medicine at Yale University in New Haven, but switched to art after two semesters. In 1989 he completed his studies and went to New York where his senior thesis ‘Field Dressing’ was shown in a group exhibition in a gallery. Barney’s solo exhibition at Regen Projects Gallery attracted great attention in the art world. His participation at the documenta IX in 1992 and the Venice Biennale in 1993 followed. tHe main subject in Barney’s films, performances and video installations is the body and its physicality that he deals by using biology, mythology, sports and medicine. Matthew Barney, who received many awards as for example Goslar Kaiserring in 2007, lives and works in New York. (fea)
