The present Safavid steel plaque dates back to the 17th century and was presumably part of the inventory of a Persian Mausoleum. These kinds of plaques were originally mounted on gilt copper plates and embedded into wood-paneled walls.
The offered steel plaque features a Shiite calligraphy over filigree arabesque scrolls, reading a traditional greeting known from the holy day of Ashura: ‘Al-salam 'ali al-khud al-tarib’ (engl. ‘for the greeting of the dust-covered cheek’).
Condition:
The steel plaque is in very good condition with minor traces of age and oxidation. It measures 12.5 x 40 cm. (cbo)
