Description
Triassic period
Chinle Formation, Arizona, USA
Dimensions (height x width x depth): 17 ½ x 14 ½ x 10 ¾ in. (44.5 x 36.8 x 27.3 cm)
This petrified wood log section spent millions of years buried beneath volcanic sediment in the Chinle Formation in Arizona. Its exterior became encrusted with stones, while the interior was introduced to mineral-rich water seepage, creating the beautiful shades of red, ochre, cream and brown seen here. In this example, the entire log has been fully polished and the natural bark has been removed to give the beautiful piece a sculpture-like quality. This specimen measures 17 ½ x 14 ½ x 10 ¾ in. (height x width x depth).
Due to the aged nature of the materials, please note that the preservation of fossils often includes reparation, restoration, and enhancement. A specimen is rarely uncovered in totality and customarily entails the replacement and reconstruction of various elements lost from the decay and erosion process. This also may require the professional highlighting, shading, or coloring of separate pieces for the exhibition of a comprehensive, integrated appearance.
