Photographer Lotte Jacobi often printed images onto postcards for personal communications, as seen in this present lot. This image of Nobel Prize winner Albert Einstein shows the famed theoretical physicist smoking a pipe while wearing a white shirt and hat.

Executed circa 1920 and printed in the 1960s, this gelatin silver print is signed by the photographer. It measures 5 ½ x 3 ½ inches. Very light yellowing but otherwise very good condition.

Lotte Jacobi (German/American, 1896-1990)

Born to a family of celebrated photographers, Lotte Jacobi started her career at the age of twelve assisting her father in the darkroom. Working in her family’s studio primarily making portraits, Jacobi came to be one of the most successful portraitists in Berlin. Fleeing the Nazi Germany, Jacobi immigrated to America in 1935, where she set up a studio in New York with her sister. There she photographed numerous subjects including Alfred Stieglitz, Albert Einstein, Robert Frost, J.D. Salinger, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Her works can be found in the public collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Currier Museum of Art, Manchester; National Gallery of Canada; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; and the Berlinische Galerie, Berlin.
