Oil signed and dated 1847. Sir John Everett Millais. British. 1829-1896. The Tribe of Benjamin Seizing the Daughters of Shiloh. 1847. Signed and inscribed with title on a label on the stretcher. Oil on canvas. Painted when the artist was 17 years old, one of his earliest known works. Provenance: Christie's Sale. London. March 9, 1867, Lot #83, A. Cameron Esq.; Sale: Sotheby's, Belgravia, November 20, 1973, Lot 44; Sale : Sotheby's, London, June 21, 1989, Lot #101 Exhibited: London, Royal Academy, 1848 and The Old British Gallery, 1877. In 1840, Millais became the youngest student ever admitted to The Royal Academy,. where he exhibited his first painting , Pizarro Seizing the Inca of Peru (London, Victoria and Albert) in 1846. A work of considerable importance to his oeuvre, Tribe of Benjamin was the second painting Millais exhibited at the Academy in 1848; it won a gold medal there when Millais was only nineteen years old.
