Item Details
Description
Jade. China, Song Dynasty (960-1279) to Ming (from 1368)
Splendid example in powerfully curved composition, compactly carved white opaque jade (Baiyu)! This pendant is thus so interesting because it presents an archaic work from one of the richest cultural eras in China – and especially demanding aesthetic quality. The almost already baroque-like stylistic appearance is very typical for mid- to later period of the prototype epoch (Zhou), as is the thickness of the jade (about 8 mm). The decorative execution is definitely dominant, even the tiger head must be submissive to it, also he is mainly composed of spirals. While the difference between tiger and dragon is often not clear, here the tiger claws are nicely carved while anatomically freely situated. Somehow this fantastic composition of spirals and de facto submissive tiger similarities reminds us– naturally distantly – of the faces of Arcimboldo. The spirals would be themselves (as they principally stand for clouds) the element of dragon, however some of the spiral forms definitely flow into claws. Even hints of flaming fur markings can be discovered, but also a finely incised scale pattern! The tail ends energetically in a curl with hooks and claws (!). On this side of the huang are darker areas as well as defined weathering corresponding to age. Decor is indeed on both sides, however not identical but rather freely designed. WIDTH 9,9 CM
