Description
Wood, Indonesia, 1st half 20th cent.
Very expressively carved sculpture with fantastic effect. The style is of Gusti Mado Gedob around 1930. Garuda is the mythic eagle, a divine bird and Vishnu´s personal totem animal, known also (and worshipped) as the snake killer. Here the bird is portrayed as defensive, dramatically convincing in its artistic execution – sharp open beak, predator´s teeth, gesture of demon protection with two wide-spread fingers. Garuda has indeed a human body but powerful dangerous wings, tail feathers as well as a crown on his head. HEIGHT 62,3 CM
From the private collection of Robert W., acquired 1970´s – 1980´s
