Item Details
Description
Brass, bronze, gold. Japan, Meiji Period, 19th cent.
A truly elaborate large Tsuba, of square form, with recessed edges and rim in high relief. The view side presents Fukurokuju, god of the long-evity, showing his typical high head. Opposed to him there is set Bishamonten, the god of luck, in full armour and wearing a (almost Roman-style) helmet on the head. Both are shown engaged in a Kubikiri-fight by pulling a cord that is laid around the necks of the competitors. Here, Fukurokuju seems to be the winner. The depictions are done in Iroe-Takazogan with Shakudo, Sentoku, gold, etc. Symbols of “The Eight Treasures†are engraved on an Ishimeji ground. The obverse side is presenting two long-evity symbols – turtle and herons with scrolls, further including a retrospective dating "Horeki Ganrei (1758) Mid Springâ€, signed ISSANDO JOI, who was one of the most famous Tsuba artists from Nara. Very good condition. HEIGHT 10,3 CM
