PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF A PALM BEACH LADY:FINE LOUIS XVI STYLE TULIPWOOD AND FRUITWOOD MARQUETRY ORMOLU MOUNTEDMAHOGANY BUREAU PLAT, GERVIS-MAXIMILIEN-EUGENE DURAND
Circa 1875
the underside stamped three times, G. Durand, the rectangular leather inset top within an ormolu leaf tip border, the frieze with three drawers, the centermost drawer with a projecting floral marquetry panel, the reverse with false drawers, the sides and reverse also with a projecting inlaid panel, further decorated with ormolu mounts and a border of ribbon-tied reeds, the straight tapering legs headed by ormolu bow-tied foliage, and ending in paw feet.

GERVAIS-MAXIMILIEN-EUGENE DURAND, (b. 1839)Specialized in the production of 18th century style furniture of the finest quality. Durand exhibited his furniture at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1889 where he received great acclaim and a Silver Medal. His designs were in competition to those of Aubrey Beurdeley and Henri Dasson.
Durand produced much of the furniture in the Louis XV and XVI styles for the palaces, chateaux and villas of the 17th and 18th century that were being restored and refurnished throughout France associated with the scholarship so prevalent during this period of historical revivals.
