Description
A great cane of two clasped hands. The ivory handle is 3 3/4" high and 1 1/3" at its widest. It depicts in wonderful detail, a bouquet of flowers with blossoms and beads on top. Below that is a pair of hands with fancy cuffs, in a clasp, said to be a symbol of fidelity. The carving is superb and it is very similar to picture #25 on page 284 of Dike's La Canne Objet D'Art. There is a 2/3" silver collar on a smooth partridgewood shaft that ends with a 3/4" ivory ferrule. The overall length is 36" and the condition is very good. It is perhaps English, ca 1880, and it is a fine example from the collection of the late Philip Hampton. Estimate: $1500-$2500.
