Description
VIRGINIA FOLK ART CARVED AND PAINTED CANE / WALKING STICK, maple, plain handle incised with crescent moons, shaft featuring clasped hands, turtle, snakes, lizard, and hand clutching a guitar/fiddle. Retains original polychrome paint-decorated surface. Late 19th/early 20th century. 35 1/2" LOA.
Very good overall condition with minor to moderate wear, very small loss to guitar/fiddle. Lacking ferrule.
Literature: See JSE & Associates, Lot 246, April 5, 2014, The Collection of the late John and Lil Palmer, for an example, descended in the Bell family of Loudoun Co., VA, carved by the same hand as the present lot.
Provenance: From a private North Carolina collection.
