Description
The wonderful silver relic cane of Union General David Gregg, with a stanhope. The smooth silver knob handle is 1 3/4" high and 1 1/3" across the top that is inscribed: "Gen. Gregg from the ruins & burned Capitol, Harrisburg, PA, from dock". Below the handle on the dark walnut relic shaft is a stanhope depicting the Capitol before the fire that destroyed it. The stanhope picture is clear and visible. A 1 1/2" white metal and iron ferrule completes the piece. (General David M. Gregg (1833-1916), had a distinguished career rising from the rank of Captain when he enlisted in 1861. He commanded the 8th PA Cavalry in the Army of the Potomac, and fought with gallantry in several battles. He was promoted to Major General on 8/1/64. A paper giving some of his background, along with the history of the Pennsylvania State Capital Building will accompany this lot.) The overall length is 35 2/3" and the condition is excellent. It is ca 1898, and it is a marvelous historical example that once belonged to a Civil War General. Estimate: $2000-$3000.
