Description
A rare and important pre-Civil War silver presentation cane from South Carolina Governor James H. Means to James Simons, Speaker of the House. The coin silver octo-configured handle is 1 2/3" high and 1 1/3" across the top that is inscribed: "Presented By Gov. J. H. Means to James Simons, Speaker". The shaft is natural stained hickory that terminates with a 2 3/4" burnished brass and iron ferrule that is maker-marked: "Gaithe". The overall length is 35 2/3" and the condition is very good. It is ca 1850, and it is a scarce historical example from South Carolina. (Both gentlemen went on the have distinguished careers in the Confederate Army. J.H. Means rose to the rank of colonel and was killed at the second Battle of Bull Run, while James Simons was the first General Officer to be appointed by Confederate President, Jefferson Davis. Simons was commanding officer of the Confederate defense during the first attack at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861 that started the Civil War.
