Description
A very nice wood folk art cane of an American Indian. Made of a single piece of beech wood, it has a bec de corbin handle that is 2 3/4" high and 3 1/4" wide. It depicts in fine detail, the head of an American Indian wearing a skull cap with feathers, staring skyward. At the top the natural, barked shaft there is a small, inlaid bright metal shield that has tiny unreadable decoration. Polished branch nibs adorn the shaft that ends with a 1 1/4" burnished brass and iron ferrule. The overall length is 39 1/3" and the condition is very good. It is probably Continental, ca 1890. (An American Indian craze was occurring in Europe at this time and with several touring American Wild West shows featuring American Indians providing influence in artistic endeavors.) This fine example is part of the collection of Dr. Renzo Traballesi. Estimate: $1200-$1800.
