Description
A wonderful relic and presentation cane to J.H. Jenks. The ivory knob handle is 1 3/4" high and 1/4" at its widest. There is a 1/3" silver collar that is inscribed: "From Waterloo", "R.H.E. to J. H. Jenks", "1839". The relic shaft is a natural hardwood with squared silver eyelets, ostensibly from Waterloo, the famous, Belgium battlefield where England’s Duke of Wellington defeated Napoleon in 1815. (See Wikipedia for full details). The cane ends with a 1 3/4" burnished brass ferrule. The overall length is 34 1/2" and the condition is very good. It was perhaps fashioned in America using the relic shaft. It was acquired from the Jenks estate, Bedford Mass., and it is a great example of the kind. Estimate: $1500-$2500.
