Description
A wonderful crab cane with seaweed and barnacles. The large ivory ball handle is 1 7/8" in diameter. It is fully carved and depicts in great detail, a crab with its front claws intertwined and its eight long legs clutching a rock. There are traces of worn red paint on its shell. The rock is encrusted with many barnacles and much seaweed hangs down. The realistic carving is superb. There is 3/4" smooth silver collar on a dark stained hardwood that is perhaps figured birch. It ends with a 1" burnished brass ferrule. The overall length is 34 1/2" and the condition is very good. It is perhaps Continental, ca 1890 and it is a fabulous example from the collection of the late Philip Hampton. Estimate: $1500-$2500.
