Item Details
Description
Walking stick created by a confederate prisoner of war held at Camp Chase Ohio, June 4th 1862. This cane relates to a known group of canes which were carved in a very specific manner by the Southern prisoners held at camp Chase during the Civil war. This example includes an 8 headed serpent, initials for Gen. Lee and others, geometric 8 sided conical handle, some polychrome decoration, and fanciful animals bellow: snake, birds, turtle, etc. "From early 1862 to mid 1863 numerous walking sticks with shared design elements were produced by these prisoners of war. Almost all have a cylindrical or conical grip above a faceted segment with relief carved block text usually including the date and Camp Chase location".
