Description
A very nice American oak lift-top cane case. Made entirely of dark American oak, it measures 47" high, 36" wide, and 18" deep. It has a curved glass lift top that is made with brass butterfly hinges and there is an iron handgrip for raising it. There is a metal label that has the name of the maker: Oscar Onken of Cincinnati, Ohio. It is glassed on all sides except for the bottom half of the back that is wood-paneled. It has a ball and stick grid with 78 square compartments, and the floor is fashioned in three steps that have matching shallow holes for stability of the cane tips. It is in good general condition. It is ca 1890 and it is a good example of these uniquely American oak pieces that were typically used in retail stores, but are now sought after as fine antiques for displaying one?s collection. Estimate: $1500-$2500.
